Formerly an estate of the Marquis d’Albertas in the 18th century, the residence became a hospital during the 1914-18 war.
For a few years after the war, the building served as an orphanage called “Le Bercail”. Later, in 1932, the property was converted into a hotel.
The bastide served as a command post for the Generals DE LATTRE DE TASSIGNY and DE MONTSABERT during the fight for liberation.
The Relais de la Magdeleine was a favourite stopover for Marcel Pagnol (French novelist, playwright and filmmaker) on his way back from his villa in Saint Tropez because he knew Gémenos well. It was here that he shot several sequences of the film “Regain” (adapted from the novel y Jean Giono).
